Making New Friends through the Boy Scouts of America

Relocating to a new city can be exciting: new home, new schools, new places and activities to explore. boy scoutOne way to help with integrating into your new community is to join local organizations. If you have young boys, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is a worthwhile program to experience.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is one of America’s largest youth development organizations. It was founded in 1910. The BSA program combines educational activities with strong civic values and a lot of fun. The goals are to build boys’ characters, train them to be good citizens and develop personal fitness.

By participating in the Scouts, young men benefit by building life and leadership skills. These are gained through courses of study such as first aid, cooking, camping, citizenship and emergency preparedness. Successful completion of the courses leads to recognition in the form of merit badges and rank advancement.

The boys’ pursuit of merit badges and rank advancement leads to new responsibilities in troop leadership. These skills are tested in real life by camping and outdoor venture activities. In addition to frequent camping, the boys have opportunities to experience SCUBA diving, sailing and high-adventure backpacking.

The experience of being part of the scouting community also builds a young man’s confidence. Shared experiences can often lead to lifelong friendships and these friendships are nurtured in a setting that values being involved in and giving back to the community.

If you are looking for a productive, healthy and fun way to spend time with your children, the Boy Scouts of America embraces and strengthens family relationships. Through the last 100 years, the BSA applied lessons learned and depended on the guidance of its membership. It will continue to do so as it adapts to the future needs of the Scouting community.
