When looking for a place to live in Hanoi, be mindful of the amount of noise coming from the street or neighborhood, particularly in locations close to bars, schools, street markets, construction sites or busy traffic.
What are the most popular neighborhoods in your city for expats?
Hoan Kiem District – the center of Hanoi, which has many historical houses o and apartments in both high- and low-rise buildings.
- Hai Ba Trung District – also in the center of Hanoi; some serviced apartments and private houses for rent.
- West Lake – a residential area where most expats live. There is a greater variety of housing, such as private villas, compounds and a few apartments with all facilities. West Lake is 20 minutes by car from the center.
- Ciputra – large new development consisting of villas and apartments. The United Nations International School and Singapore International School are located here.
- Van Phuc Diplomatic Complex – The area is made up mainly of villas and apartments for diplomats and others.
Do expats tend to buy or rent their homes?

Typically, will I be required to pay additional money up front (such as a deposit) before moving into leased housing? If so, how much is common?
Normally, a one month deposit is requested. Some landlords request a three-month payment at once.
Are utilities generally included in the price of rent, or are they extra?
Utilities are generally extra. However, it's a good idea to check with the agent/landlord to see what is (or isn't) included in the price of rent.
Are there special security concerns I should be aware of in regards to my home or choice of neighborhood?
While there is nothing in particular to fear, it is always wise to take basic precautions (such as locking your doors).
I’m not sure if I should bring my appliances. What is the electric current, Hz and plug shape in your city?
Current is 220V. Adaptors are available.
