Nowadays, it’s possible to move overseas with almost everything imaginable – including your olive trees! When preparing for an international move, one of the hardest parts any future expats has to sort out is deciding what to take abroad and what to leave (or give or donate). Normally, we are talking about clothes, electronics or home decorations. However, mainly due to family reasons and emotional attachment, it’s perfectly possible that you consider taking with you abroad other things. This was the case of one of our clients in Italy, who after thoughtful reflection, decided to embark on a relocation to Greece, with his furniture, personal effects and… four olive trees! As in Crown Relocations we are thrilled by challenges – as long as they help us learn and provide a better moving experience -, we started preparing the relocation without hesitation. As it can be expected, due to the nature of this move, its organization was significantly more complex than a usual door-to-door move. First, the help of a gardener was necessary to prepare and remove the trees from the soil. Then, not all the usual moving equipment could be used to move the trees. In order to load the trees in the moving truck, a special crane was needed. The loading process had to be done with extreme care as each tree should be transported with a big clod of earth closed by a jute cloth soaked in water – this way, it could be ensured that the trees were relocated in optimal conditions-. The trees were moved in a closed truck -together with the rest of the belongings to be transported- taking into consideration also the local weather at that time – January- in the country. Despite the appearances, in winter, temperatures in Italy can reach only 1 or 5 degrees Celsius – and if temperatures were extremely low, the olive trees could be affected! However, the trees –and the rest of the belongings- arrived safely and in less than ten days into their destination. Now, they are happily enjoying the Greek spring!
