Relocating to the UK with children?

A relocation is a big change and most children might be anxious, these guidelines can help them with some information on the journey they are about to start.

The weather

British citizens usually chat about the weather with good motive. The weather in Britain changes a lot. In spring, it gets warm. As summer approaches, it gets hot enough to dress in shorts. There are a lot of beaches and families often visit these for day trips during the summer days.

In autumn and winter, it rains a lot and can get very cold, you will need to dress in warm clothes and don’t forget the umbrella and your rainy boots!
It does not snow very frequently in London or in the South of England It usually snows in northern England and also in Scotland and Wales.

The language

When you travel around Great Britain, you will notice that there are many different accents and ways to speak English. Sometimes people in England have difficulties understanding the accents of people from Scotland and Wales.

Transport

Walking is the best way to move around, but be careful to watch out for cars. In Britain, people drive on the left side of the road which may be different from your home country. Always remember to stop, listen and look before you cross the road.

To travel longer distances, you can to take a bus. Buses can be found all over Britain. London has the most famous buses of all red double-deckers.

Trains also go all over Britain. London has the oldest and one of the longest underground systems in the world. There are also underground trains in Glasgow and Liverpool. Some places like Cambridge and Norwich have special paths to make it safer to get around by bicycle.

Things to do with kids

Wherever you live in Britain, you will find different places to have fun with children.

Many kids enjoy playing sports or watching sports on TV or at the stadium. The national sport is football. With famous football teams such as Chelsea, Arsenal,  Liverpool , Manchester United etc. Other popular sports including cricket and rugby.

If the weather is nice, you can visit Britain’s many parks. At these parks, some children like kites. Many kids also like rollerskate, rollerblade, or ride skateboards or bicycles. Many parks also have ponds, you can hire a small boat and paddle around the water and feed the ducks.

Eating

There are different types of food in U.K. but fish and chips are the most popular. British people eat chips with everything, including curry sauce or mushy peas.

Another popular meal is roast beef, potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Sausage rolls, steak and kidney pie are also well liked. A traditional English breakfast is fried eggs with bacon, sausages and baked beans.
There are also lots of different biscuits and sweets available and It’s very nice to eat these with tea, which is the national drink.

Many other kinds of foods can also be found like: Italian, Thai, Indian, Chinese, Greek, French and in addition, you can have pizza, fried chicken and burgers almost everywhere.

With all the fun things to do and see in Britain, your kids will never be bored. They will make friends easily and it does not matter what country you come from or what language you speak. Other kids will be looking for new friends, too!
