Mastering Your Move - A Guide on How to Pack Your Bedroom Easily and Efficiently

Relocating is an exciting adventure, but it takes a lot of planning and decluttering. With careful planning and efficient packing, it’s possible to make the transition go more smoothly, ensuring that you have all the essentials you need to settle in and relax in your new home.

Prep ahead with a home inventory

A home inventory serves as a checklist to ensure you know exactly what you had at your origin and what you should have at your destination. You’ll want to document exactly what you own, its approximate value, and where it goes. You may also want to record the condition of items that have existing damage or that need special care.

Take pictures or videos of your valuables, fragile items and electronics. Scan or photograph important receipts and store your files and receipts with the home inventory so that everything is in one place.

Schedule and organise your packing – One room at a time

Start your packing around one month ahead your moving day. Set your very own timetable so you can pack at your pace without interrupting your daily work routine or schedule. Let’s get started with packing your bedroom and kitchen, with quite a lot of stuff involved in packing and required reasonably more packing boxes.

Declutter and organize your bedroom

Pack all the small things on your bedside table, nightstand and vanity unit into storage box or laundry basket. Throw out anything expired or broken, such as outdated makeup and worn-out accessories. Sort through your clothes and decide what to keep and what to dispose of. Organize your drawers, pull everything out from under your bed, and pack what you want to keep in boxes.

Ideas for storage and packing

Get a storage with dividers and compartments to keep your jewellery and makeup sorted into categories. Linen bins with lids are perfect for keeping delicate clothing and accessories in your closet. They can be easily folded down when they’re not in use. A rectangular-shaped one works well on a bookshelf or in a drawer. Clear bins let you see items easily while protecting them from dust. Plastic organizers allow for stacking and can store heavier items, beware of those with sharp edges that may tear clothing.

Pack your bedroom items

Pack your decorative items first – pictures, rugs, lamps – you probably won’t need them until you arrive at your new home.

Make sure all clothes, rugs, sheets, and curtains are clean and fully dry before you pack them into a box. Use silica gel to absorb the moisture in the box. Get some garment bags to store fabrics like leather, wool, cotton, and rayon. For formal wear, consider getting wardrobe boxes to keep your clothing on hangers during the move.

Get some vacuum-sealed compression bags to pack your bulky items. Place your pillow, quilt, sheet, blanket, and clothing items in, seal them, and use a vacuum or pump that comes with the bags to suck out the air, making them more compact.

Preparing your bedroom furniture

You can keep your nightstand, cabinet, or compact chest intact; just seal and secure the drawers with tapes. Pack content of the dresser drawers, especially if they are heavy, so that loose items don’t roll around. You may want to disassemble your vanity set or work console for easier transporting or minimize its chance of damage. Follow the manual to dissemble the cabinet or dresser.

For a simple bed, dissemble the bed frame by removing its headboard, slats, and legs. Put your mattress into a mattress bag or a mattress carrier (thicker bags with handles) to prevent it from tearing and getting dirty. Alternatively, you can wrap your mattress in shrink wrap and moving blankets. Don’t fold or bend the mattress.
