What types of schools do most expats in your city choose for their children?

There are private and semi-private international schools available for English, French, German, and Japanese speakers. Most expatriates choose to place their children in English-speaking schools.
These schools use American, British, Australian or international curricula.

What are some examples of these schools?

  • International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) – American curriculum with o Advanced Placement programs and the International Baccalaureate (IB) program. Pre-school through Grade 12.

  • Mont’Kiara International School (MKIS) – American curriculum. Pre-school through Grade 12.

  • The Alice Smith School – English national curriculum. Reception to Sixth Form (A-level preparation).

  • Australian International School of Malaysia (AISM) – NSW curriculum. Preparation to Year 12.

  • Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur (JSKL) – Japanese curriculum. Ages 6 to 15 (Grade 9).

  • Garden International School – English national curriculum. Kindergarten to Sixth Form (A-level preparation).

  • Lycee Francais de Kuala Lumpur (French International School)

  • Deutsche Schule Kuala Lumpur (German International School)

Is there a lot of competition for spots in local schools?

Although Kuala Lumpur offers a diversity of international schools, the competition for placement is a challenge. Submission of an application as early as possible is advisable.

Are pre-schools also widely available (for children 5 years old and below)?

Outside of the programs available for three to four-year-olds in the international schools, there are not a large variety of pre-schools for English-speaking children in KL. The most popular one is Montessori, but it has only a few locations. Placement spots in most of the facilities tend to be consistently fairly high in demand.

How are most kids transported to and from school?

School buses are arranged by the international schools. Fees vary, depending upon the distance to the schools.

When does the typical school year start and end?

The international school year usually begins in mid-August or early September and ends in June or July. The exception is the Australian School, which follows the Australian school calendar: January to December.

Is there anything else I should know about international schools?

All international schools require application fees, which are non-refundable. Please contact Crown with any questions about admissions and fees or to arrange a school search.
