What types of schools do most expats in your city choose for their children?
Most expats choose private schools for their children. Some public schools do not meet the same standards as those in expats’ home countries.
What are some examples of these schools?
Galaxy International School – A private school that caters to children from preschool to grade 12. The school is of a high standard with many sports facilities. Many expats' children attend this school.
Lincoln Community School - A private non-profit, college-preparatory, international school in Accra. There is an expatriate population associated with the various embassies, foreign service agencies, NGOs, United Nations organizations and international businesses. They also have a large number of students whose parents are Ghanaian nationals: 20 percent of the students are Americans, 14 percent are Ghanaians and 66 percent are from other countries. Instruction is given in English and classes are offered for preschool to grade 12. The school year is divided into two semesters: August to December and January to June. The institution was established in 1968.
Is there a lot of competition for spots in local schools?
Most international schools will administer a test to the prospective students (depending on the age group). If the results are accepted and no other special arrangements need to be made, the child will then be accepted and be able to start classes within a week or two. Sometimes, delays related to school records and results develop in the country of origin. It's recommended that you get copies of all the necessary paperwork in advance of the start of the semester.
Are pre-schools also widely available (for children approx. 2 to 5 years old)?
Yes, there are many pre-schools and nurseries of a high caliber that will cater to children in this age group.
How are most kids transported to and from school?
Children are normally dropped of by their parents or personal driver. Some older children use the local taxis.
When does the typical school year start and end?
It is divided into two semesters: August to December and January to June.
Is there anything else I should know about local schools?
It is advised that you register for schools a few months before the start of a semester.
