Before I get sick, what should I know about seeking medical care in your city as an expat?
Most hospitals and health centers do have a doctor on site and offer 24-hour emergency services. If a person doesn't have any insurance or medical aid to cover bills, then cash is required before treatment.
Hospitals are equipped to deal with general and small operations and treatments, depending on the specific treatment or operation that must be performed. If the hospital or doctor does not have the equipment to deal with a specific procedure, then patients are referred to a local or internal hospital. It is recommended that you obtain good insurance coverage.
Hospitals under a national health insurance scheme:
Lister Hospital, Cantonments, Accra
Nyaho Medical Centre, Airport Residential Area, Accra
Princess Marie Louise Hospital, Accra (Children's Hospital)
Health insurance is offered through:
METCare
Mutual Alliance Health
AXA PPP Healthcare

People living in the rural and mining parts of Ghana come to the main city for treatment. Major operations that cannot be done in Ghana will be sent to either South Africa or the Middle East depending on the type of equipment needed.
